How to Choose the Right Frame

Bella Moudling

Of course, there are many elements to framing art (the mats, glazing options, backing, hanger, mounting, etc.), but the frame is one of the most important.  Getting the right style, color, scale, and texture can make a big difference in how your art looks.

Here are a few considerations when choosing your frame:

  • How heavy will your art be when it is framed?  You must have a frame that can hold the weight of your art and frame and that can accommodate a secure hanging system without falling apart or sagging.

  • What size frame visually stands up to the scale and boldness of your art? Generally, the larger the art and the bolder the art, the wider the moulding (the stuff that frames are made of) should be.

  • What style is your art?  What style of frame would have been used to frame this art when it was produced?  Not every piece of art needs to be framed in a period frame, but they do often go together very well.

  • What color of frame works best with your art?  Black frames look good on lots of art, but it can also be too strong for many types of art.  Usually frames with colors of similar intensity with those of the art will look best.  Sometimes high contrast between art and frame can be dramatic and interesting.  Let your framer show you some color options.  You might be surprised what works with your art.

  • How do the art, the mat, and the frame interact.  Sometimes coordinating the mat and frame colors adds unity to the framing treatment.  Elements of the art can sometimes be mirrored in the frame style or color.

  • How does the texture of the frame enhance the art?  The sheen of gold leaf, the irregular visual interest of burl veneer, the subtle wood grain, or the rustic distressing can make a frame perfect for your art.
