Local artist/printmaker, Emily Gray Koehler specializes in Color-Reduction Woodcuts

This process is like a traditional woodcut, with much more complicated form of print making that allows the artist to create editionable multi-colored prints.

Carving away!

To make editions with multiple colors, Emily has to create a detailed drawing on a wood block. She then carves away all areas that she wishes to remain white (or the paper’s color). Emily will roll ink on the board to be printed on the number of pieces of paper for that edition to be. Each additional color used with require more carving and rolling of ink to be printed. Generally colors are worked from light to dark.

Collagraph printing

Emily also incorporates in many of her editions the technique of collagraph printing. This processes often uses more organic material that creates a textural collage within the image to balance the hard lines that carving creates.

This makes for uniquely beautiful artwork!
